Youth Advisory Council awards $30,000 in grants

Arts, education, human services and literacy programs are just some of the areas touched by the most recent round of grants from the Northeast Michigan Youth Advisory Council. The Community Foundation for Northeast Michigan Board of Trustees recently approved $30,182 in a new round of youth-related NEMYAC grants covering a four-county area that includes Alcona, Alpena, Montmorency and Presque Isle counties.

New NEMYAC grants are:

1. Alcona Community Schools – awarded $950 for the AHS Weight Room project and “Project World Connect.”

2. The Chosen Ranch (Community Support Distribution Services) – awarded $700 for its “Ranch Rewards” program.

3. Child and Family Services of Northeast Michigan – awarded $1,850 for the Foster Home Assistance program in Alcona County.

4. Village of Lincoln – awarded $559 for the Alcona County Easter Egg Hunt.

5. Mikado Township – awarded $700 for the “No Child Without a Christmas” project.

6. Thunder Bay Theatre – awarded $1,500 for the TBT 2 program.

7. Thunder Bay Trails Association – awarded $2,500 for Cross Country Ski Grooming Equipment.

8. Alpena Gymnastics, Inc. – awarded $1,500 to purchase beam safety mats.

9. Alpena Public Schools – awarded $3,120 for three programs: Engaging Students in the Math Classroom, Hinks Elementary Mackinac Island Field Trip and the Ella White Literacy Manipulatives project.

10. Alpena Blues Coalition – awarded $100 for the “Blues in the Schools” program.

11. Boys and Girls Club of Alpena – awarded $400 for the “Tied Together” project.

12. Friends of Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary – awarded $1,250 for the Thunder Bay International Film Festival Student Film Competition.

13. Art in the Loft (NE MI Center for Fine Arts, Inc.) – awarded $2,300 for the smART Technology program, which integrates art and technology.

14. Boys Scouts of America Michigan Crossroads Council – awarded $2,000 for the Comprehensive Youth Development program.

15. Hillman Community Schools – awarded $3,900 for the RealCare Baby program and “Guys and Girls in Exploring Greece.”

16. Northeast Michigan Community Mental Health Authority – awarded $500 for children’s activities expenses.

17. St. John Lutheran School – awarded $2,136 for the STEAM Lab 101 project.

18. Rogers City Area Schools – awarded $2,877 for the “Clickers in the Classroom” project and to purchase flexible seating for a fifth grade class.

19. Onaway Area Schools – awarded $1,000 to send Onaway students to Chicago to see “Hamilton.”

The next deadline for NEMYAC Grants is Jan. 15, 2018. Community Impact Grant applications are also due on Jan. 15. Applications for both grant opportunities can be found at www.cfnem.org.

The Northeast Michigan Youth Advisory Council (NEMYAC) is made up of youth from across the CFNEM service area.

These young people learn the importance of philanthropy and community service through the grantmaking process, gaining important leadership skills along the way. NEMYAC Grants are made possible through the Kellogg Youth Fund at the Community Foundation for Northeast Michigan.
